For kids, the doctor’s office can be a scary place.
Reducing fear of doctors, medical offices, and hospitals is all part of the goal of an event taking place this weekend in Lansing. The Teddy Bear Picnic at Michigan State University will feature the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan-sponsored Teddy Bear Hospital, which will give children a chance to interact with medical professionals in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere.
Children and their parents are invited to bring a favorite stuffed animal to the event Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MSU 4-H Children’s Garden. Kids will be able to take their furry friends through different specialty care stations to simulate a real-life hospital experience. Admission is free.
Stuffed animals will be examined by volunteers representing radiology, neonatology, pulmonology, and general pediatrics. There will be an ambulance to explore and police, including a K-9 officer, will be there as well. BCBSM representatives will be on hand with giveaway items for adults and a dental check-up stop for the little ones.
Volunteers from MSU’s College of Human Medicine, MSU College of Nursing, and MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine will interact with kids. Players from MSU’s women’s basketball, women’s soccer and pom-pom teams will also be in attendance. MSU kinesiology students will be on site giving away jump ropes.
Lansing Neurosurgery give away 500-600 fitted helmets, while the MSU Federal Credit Union will offer face painting and balloon animals. Other participating organizations include Sparrow Hospital, the YMCA of Lansing, and Meijer.
