Skip the Holiday Circus and Head to the Zoo

Take a break from the feisty shopping animals at the mall this holiday season and take your family to see the feisty (and cute) animals at the zoo. The Detroit Zoo has plenty of new features with a recently opened lion habitat, smartphone app, and three adorable grizzly cubs on the way.
There’s plenty of holiday-themed cheer going on throughout the end of the year, too:
- Through January 2nd, the zoo will be lit up with holiday trees sponsored by local businesses as part of the Wild Winter celebration.
- The first three Saturdays of December will feature waffle buffets with Santa from 8-10 a.m. While we always thought of Old St. Nick as a fourth-meal kind of guy, I’m sure he’s plenty fun at breakfast time, too.
- The Animals After Dark overnight program is still going on through the holidays, offering groups the chance to see the Detroit Zoo in an entirely different way than other zoo goers, observing unique animal behaviors, enjoying a campfire and spending the night at the Ford Educational Center. For open dates, check out the Detroit Zoo events calendar.
The Detroit Zoo has exclusive discounts for members of the Michigan Blues. If you’re a member, go to bcbsm.com/xtras to start saving on your Wild Winter experience today!
