Tell me how you move! Yes, I’m always interested in knowing which activities you enjoy in order to stay physically active.
I’m not the only one who is interested. “Tell us how you move!” is a becoming a mantra of the Be Healthy Berrien Million Mile Challenge. The challenge is a partnership of the Berrien County Health Department, Lakeland HealthCare, Southwest Michigan Planning Commission, Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA, Niles-Buchanan YMCA and the United Way of Southwest Michigan. The goal is one that I’m sure I think is achievable; reduce obesity and chronic illness in Berrien County. If we do that, we will help increase the over health and wellness in this area of the state.
The challenge began the first week of May, 2013. Berrien County residents have signed up for the challenge and continue to log their miles from running, walking or biking. But those are just a few of the activities that are included in the challenge. Each participant can also log their exercise minutes, which are converted to miles in the activity log. The list of exercises that we have to select from is not a short list by any means. It includes daily activities such as gardening, swimming, and yoga just to name a few.
As of today, Berrien County residents have logged over 64,000 miles of movement!
I am doing my part to allow that number to rise; walking, gardening, bicycling and dancing are more fun for me when I know that I’m contributing to the goal of one million miles of movement!
I know a lot of others feel the same way. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stopped by someone who is participating in the Million Mile Challenge to share with me how surprised they are at the miles they accumulate in a typical day. Everyone of them says they focus more on daily exercise than they ever have in the past and notice that their family members, neighbors and coworkers are starting to do the same.
Even if Berrien County falls short of hitting the one million mile mark, we’ve already achieved something that is more important; a more active lifestyle. I love it!
