Hanukkah (Chanukah) begins this year when the sun sets on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023. The eight-day Jewish “festival of lights” runs until sundown Friday, Dec. 15, and many cities across Metro Detroit are celebrating the holiday with various major events.

Every year in downtown Detroit, a 26-foot-tall menorah is lit up in downtown to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Come for the live lighting and enjoy greetings from community leaders and dignitaries, the honoring of eight lamplighters, a fire show, and hot soup and cider. There will be crafts, games and treats for children. You must RSVP by filling out this form. The event will be broadcasted live, so guests can also sign up for a virtual party kit.
