U.P. State Fair Showcases Nature’s Beauty and Bounty

Need a little more Upper Peninsula in your life?
This week is the perfect opportunity as the 87th Upper Peninsula State Fair will take place in Escanaba Aug. 17 – 23. Since 1928, the fair has provided a place for people from across the nation to experience and celebrate the unique culture and heritage of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
This year’s theme is “Mother Nature’s Open House”. Educational exhibits include “The Miracle of Life,” where spectators can actually watch the live births of calves, lambs and piglets. “Growing Up Foresters” is a hands-on exhibit about the wonders of forest ecosystems emphasizing the many ways trees and their products enhance our lives.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Pocket Park will also provide a great way for fair goers to enjoy nature. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan representatives will be on hand to give away free pedometers at the pocket park.
There’s also plenty of family-friendly entertainment to be found throughout the week. Free Midway attractions include large-scale sand sculptures, educational exhibits about animals from around the world, and strength and endurance challenges from the U.S. National Guard.
The world-famous Wallenda family will put on high-flying displays, an antique gas and steam village will take you back in time, and chainsaw carving demonstrations will produce unique works of art.
