Everything You Should Have in Your Beach Bag
A Healthier Michigan
| 3 min read
Going to the beach is not only fun, but a great way to spend time outside and connect to the natural sights and sounds of an inland lake or one of the Great Lakes. The best way to make sure your beach day is a success is to be prepared. We’ve compiled a list of must-haves to include in your beach bag.
Sun protection
The number one thing to beware of at the beach is sunburn and sun damage. Not only can a sunburn be painful and uncomfortable in the short term, but sun exposure and sun burns are catalysts for skin conditions and skin cancer. For the best sun protection, make sure you pack sunscreen, protective lip balm, a hat and sunglasses. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15. Include lip balm with SPF for sun protection. Make sure to pack a brimmed hat and sunglasses too, as well as a cover-up garment or long-sleeved shirt to shield your skin if needed.
Beach shoes or sandals
While you may be tempted to go barefoot the whole day, it’s not the wisest decision. You’ll want to make sure you have beach shoes, sandals or flip-flops at least to walk to and from the beach. Water shoes are designed to be worn both in and out of the water.
Towels and beach chairs
Packing extra towels and a beach chair are a great way to give yourself somewhere to sit or lie down, relax and cool off during your beach day. Nowadays, there are many available beach towel options, including those that dry quickly and are sand repellent.
Umbrella or parasol
Bringing along an umbrella or parasol can help to protect you from the sun, but also keep you cool. Make sure to safely secure the umbrella or parasol based on the manufacturer’s instructions, so that it does not fly away.
Water, and a cooler or cooler bag
Make sure to bring ample water for you and your group. You will lose fluid sweating on the beach, so you need plenty of water to replenish your water levels and stay hydrated. A cooler is not a must-have, but if you are bringing water or other drinks, it is nice to keep them cold. Also, you’re more likely to drink water if it is cold.
First aid supplies
Accidents happen on the beach, just like they can happen anywhere else. Having basic first aid supplies in your beach bag is a great way to prepare for cuts, scrapes, sand or grime in the eye, or other first aid needs.
Waterproof bag
Having a waterproof bag or a “dry bag” is a must at the beach to protect your phone, personal documents, first aid kit or other personal items you bring to the beach that should remain dry. Make sure you have a bag that will keep these items dry and easy-to-access.
Aloe gel or after-sun lotion
Even with your best efforts and reapplication of sunscreen, there is a chance you may still experience a sunburn at the beach. Having aloe gel or a soothing after-sun lotion in your bag can help you prepare for possible sunburns. Make sure to not spend more time in the sun after applying these.
