Air fryers have become one of the most popular kitchen gadgets in recent years. They are commonly used for their convenience and ability to deliver crispy meals with less oil. But is cooking with an air fryer a healthier option?
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is a compact countertop appliance that circulates hot air around food to cook it, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Air fryers can use little to no oil and they mimic the effect of deep frying while creating a crispy texture without extra fat.
From crispy chicken wings to roasted veggies and even desserts, air fryers have become a go-to for many people looking to make healthier versions of their favorite everyday comfort snacks and meals.
The health benefits of air frying
According to the Cleveland Clinic, air frying can be a healthier alternative to traditional deep frying because of the reduction in calories and fat. Deep-fried foods often contain trans fats, which can increase LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and your risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Air fryers can come in handy when you want a crispy aftermath with little to no added oils.
However, not all air-fried foods are inherently healthy. Additionally, according to a 2017 study on sardines published in the Journal of Food Science, researchers suggest using an air fryer may increase the levels of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) in fish. COPs are linked to an increase in heart disease, cancer and other medical conditions.
Compared to deep frying, using an air fryer may produce fewer carcinogens called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), which form when foods are cooked at high temperatures, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
