12 Days of Holiday Recipes Day 8: Hot Cinnamon Coffee

We all know the classic coffee commercial that includes the line: “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” Ahhh yes, Peter is greeted by his younger sister as he arrives home for the holidays on a cold winters morning and the emotions start to flow — the same way as the delicious hot coffee that is poured into their coffee cups. I can’t help but immediately want a cup of my own … but then, I always do since coffee and I have been “best friends” for years now.
Coffee not only contains several health benefits (coffee drinkers are less likely to have Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems and stroke) but coffee keeps me energized too — I don’t go a day without it.
Honestly, I can’t think of any beverage I enjoy more than a hot cup of java when the temperature dips near freezing! I often like to add an ingredient or two when I really want a great tasting beverage, but I’m always careful when I do so. I realize that many of the things that are added to coffee, especially at specialty coffee shops, can really increase the calorie content of a simple cup of java. Flavored syrups, whipped cream, sugar and special toppings can create a cup of coffee that consists of hundreds of calories, and obviously this is something that I want to avoid. I would rather eat my calories, not drink them!
So to help you enjoy a delicious cup of festive brew this holiday season without all the calorie, I am sharing a recipe for hot cinnamon coffee. This recipe includes ground cinnamon, which is high in fiber, calcium, and iron. Yes, you can have both: great taste and a beverage that is good for your health (in my opinion that’s the best part). With 2012 right around the corner, I know that you can include this scrumptious beverage as you begin to focus more on your new, healthy lifestyle when Jan. 1 arrives.
Ingredients
1 cup coffee
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons nonfat milk
1 teaspoons brown sugar, if desired
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons nonfat milk
1 teaspoons brown sugar, if desired
Directions
Brew coffee of your choice. Mix in cinnamon and milk. Adjust to your liking. Add brown sugar if desired. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Makes one serving.
