Looking for a way to start the weekend inspired?
Head to the opening ceremony of the Meijer State Games of Michigan Summer Games at Fifth Third Ballpark tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The signature event of the West Michigan Sports Commission, the Meijer State Games of Michigan is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability. The Games embody the values of participation, sportsmanship and healthy living among residents of the state of Michigan. The philosophy of the Meijer State Games of Michigan is that everyone participates regardless of age or ability; everyone is welcome and everyone plays.
While cycling, girl’s lacrosse, and synchronized swimming events took place last weekend, 38 different sporting events will be in action this weekend across West Michigan. Over 7,500 athletes from across the state are expected to participate in the games.
The opening ceremony program will start with the parade of athletes, followed by the national anthem. The Olympians in attendance will be introduced to the fans, and Olympian, Tom O’Rourke, will conduct the athlete pledge. There will also be appearances from the 2014 Athlete of the Year winners, NBA All-Star Chris Kaman, and Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, Brian Calley. Finally, the opening ceremony will conclude with the torch run and the lighting of the cauldron.
Prior to the opening ceremony program, athlete check-in, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, will take place inside the Pepsi Stadium Club at Fifth Third Ballpark, and will be open from 2 to 7 p.m. Athletes will receive a commemorative credential, athlete meal ticket, and free opening ceremony t-shirt.
If you can’t make it to the opening ceremonies, check out the complete schedule of events and come out to support Michigan athletes!
