In my world, there’s little better than a good book, a blanket, some hot chocolate, and snow falling outside. Wintertime is one of the best settings for curling up with a good book and disappearing behind a story of literary ingenuity. In fact, some of my favorite childhood memories stem from classic Christmas stories.
Below are some of the best winter book lists from classics to current best sellers.
Classic Children’s Favorites:
Twas the Night Before Christmas: The very classic account of St. Nicholas climbing down our chimney and filling all the stockings.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The classic story of the Grinch who hates Christmas and the residents of Who-ville.
The Polar Express: A young boy who doubts what to believe in takes a journey on an extraordinary train ride.
The Mitten (for us Michiganders, especially): A tale of snowy forest animals that crawl into a lost mitten to find warmth, until the bear sneezes and explodes the mitten all over the forest floor.
Best Sellers:
The Casual Vacancy: Far different from her famous Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling’s first adult novel visits a small town with abounding intertwining secrets.
Almost Never: A story of desire and longing in the times of World War II and postwar Mexico.
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide: A book that wholeheartedly transformed my outlook on the entire world, Nicholas Kristof highlights human rights for women and girls in this call to action.
Life of Pi: In anticipation of the feature film coming soon, this classic follows a boy and his family on their emigration to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?: A hilariously truthful look into comedian Mindy Kaling’s life through her childhood, embarrassing college years, and trials and tribulations as a now-successful television comedian and writer.
The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook: A long awaited cookbook from Deb Perelman, award-winning blogger, who thinks cooking should be a pleasure.
Gone Girl: One of the best thriller books of the year, this suspenseful piece of literature takes you to a dark place where marriage can go terribly wrong.
Into Thick Air: Biking to the Bellybutton of Six Continents: One of my very favorites, this book follows Jim Malusa as he bikes literally to the lowest points of six different continents.
