A toothbrush is one of the main components to maintaining proper oral health. We all know brushing twice a day and replacing your old toothbrush every 3-4 months is important. But what is the best toothbrush for the cleanest teeth? Going to the store to purchase a new toothbrush can be overwhelming with all the different styles, bristles and various other choices. To make your choice easier, let’s break down the different types of toothbrushes and determine what is the best choice for the cleanest teeth.
There are two types of toothbrushes: manual and electric. Both of these will help you keep your teeth clean and one is not necessarily more effective than the other. The most important part of choosing a toothbrush is picking one you feel comfortable using twice a day. Here are a few other important tips to keep in mind:
- When it comes to bristles, the softer the better because they are easier on your gums. Always choose a soft bristle brush, never choose a tooth brush labeled “medium or hard”, they will do more damage to your teeth than good.
- Make sure the brush of the toothbrush you choose fits comfortably in your mouth so you can clean harder to reach areas of your mouth. Children should have a much smaller brush head than those used by adults.
- Choose a toothbrush handle that fits comfortably in your hand and is easy to maneuver around your teeth.
If you are unsure about what toothbrush to use, look for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. For more information on how to pick the best toothbrush for your mouth talk to your dentist at your next visit.
