In this video, Gracefully Greying health correspondent Lila Lazarus brings a new way to positively impact your health. As a health reporter, she has spent decades reporting on ways to stay healthy, focusing on exercise, nutritious foods, medical breakthroughs, and the power of sleep. But in all those years, she neglected to report on something proven to have a major impact on your health: journaling.
Multiple studies reveal writing in a journal can increase your happiness, help you reach your goals and yes, even improve your physical health. Self-care is key to maintaining wellness and writing by hand is self-care. According to research, “inking your thinking” can:
- increase the neural activity in your brain similar to meditating.
- organize thoughts and make sense of traumatic events.
- improve memory and release anxiety.
As a result, you may sleep better and find more energy. This, in turn, can boost your immune system and your mindset. You will feel more refreshed, do better at work and socialize more. Studies have also indicated that writing in a journal improves your self-confidence and can give you a higher IQ! Plus, the latest research shows people with asthma, arthritis and even physical wounds heal faster when they journal their thoughts and feelings.
So now, Lazarus is spending more time spreading the word about the power of journaling. She shares seven benefits of starting a daily practice.

“Your journal,” asserts Lazarus, “becomes a friend and confidante in your toughest moments and also shifts your mindset. You might even lose weight. (Not really… but you will feel lighter when you get those heavy thoughts off your mind and onto the page).”
There’s no one way to journal and the type of journal you use is a personal choice. You can spend five minutes a day or a full 15 minutes. Lazarus recommends finding a favorite pen, a notebook or journal that you love, and a quiet spot in the house where you won’t be interrupted. Make sure you’re away from any distractions.
