8 Summer Snacks That Can Stand the Heat

A Healthier Michigan

Nothing ruins your summer day faster than soggy, running fruits or spoiled cheese and crackers.
We've all been there: you put your time and energy into packing snacks for a summer day under the sun only to find out they couldn't hold up. We need snacks that hold up in heat.
What’s a person on-the-go to do about a wholesome summer snack that won't melt, spoil or give out on you? Here is a great list of healthy alternatives that will fight off hunger and survive the heat:

8 summer snacks that can withstand heat

Dried fruit

These are great for enjoying the flavor of the fruits you love without having to deal with them spoiling or running. When you're buying dried fruit, look for version without added sugar. Dried mango, peaches, apricots and pineapple and banana chips can be delicious and fun in the summer.

Crackers

Whole grain or almond flour crackers can be a fun, easy addition to a summer picnic. You may want to avoid packing them with cheese because they can become soggy and open them fresh when you're ready to eat.

Mixed nuts and seeds

These are not only good at surviving the summer weather but will give you a great boost of energy for enjoying the sunshine. Lightly salted or plain almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and pumpkin seeds provide healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.

Roasted chickpeas

This easy-to-make at-home recipe provides a good crunch and is as travel-friendly as mixed nuts and seeds. You can also try skillet chickpeas with aromatics like garlic or air-fried chickpeas with spices for a healthy snack.

Jerky

Beef, turkey, venison or even mushroom jerky provides a great source of protein. No refrigeration needed, here. But look out when you're buying it as jerky can be high in sodium. Check the labels for lower sodium options.

Pita chips

Baked pita chips can be a crunchy snack that's healthier than a traditional potato chip. This chip is especially delicious when paired with hummus or tzatziki sauce. You can make your own baked or air fried pita chips to bring along to avoid a deep-fried version.

Granola

Granola is a simple snack on its own or mixed with dried fruits and nuts to create a trail mix. You can make homemade granola with seeds and spices to manage added sugar, which can be higher in storebought versions.

Mini bagels

Whole grain bagels can be topped with great spreads like peanut butter or cream cheese and fresh fruit such as strawberries or raspberries.
Hopefully these snacks will keep you well-fed during your day-to-day hustle and bustle and save you the time of worrying over messes left by other less heat-friendly choices.
