In the quest towards living a healthier lifestyle, understanding diet and healthy foods is just one part of the journey. Equally significant, the second half should include fitness. Recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services, individuals should be getting approximately 30 minutes of physical activity per day. This can be in the form of walking, swimming, strength training, yoga, running, or another workout of your preference.
Grace Derocha, dietician for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Shari Steinbach, dietician for Meijer, explain how you can incorporate small bits of extra exercise into your grocery shopping routine. Derocha notes that shopping the perimeter when you first enter the store adds steps to your exercise. You can also park farther away, walk to the store, carry items if only buying a few things, and do calf raises and lunges while waiting in the checkout line. Steinbach adds tips on putting together a home gym and stocking up on gear and apparel, both in affordable ways.
