Summer has arrived and it’s time to get off your rump and enjoy the beautiful warm weather. Here are some things we suggest to start your summer off right.
- Plant something! All over Michigan there are opportunities to garden. Michigan Garden Clubs, Greening of Detroit and the Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority, are just a few that can help you with your green thumbs.
- Tour Detroit: A tour of the city is best early Saturday or Sunday mornings when traffic is light and parking is easy. Decide if you want to see things that are old or new and the options are plentiful. Hit Grand Boulevard for Hitsville USA – the Motown Museum, Woodward is home to both the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) and the Historical Museum. Take the time to venture down to Belle Isle and you cannot miss the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. If you’d like to see what’s new and improved in Detroit, get a group together for a Pure Michigan Detroit Tour. Channel your inner daredevil and try a Detroit Segway Tour, or a trip along the Detroit Riverwalk or the Dequindre Cut for great walking paths.
- Volunteer for a good cause: Every corner of the State has opportunities to reach out and help in many ways. The Belle Isle Conservancy needs help removing invasive plants to help the local wild life. Michigan Community Service Commission has opportunities throughout the State.
- Try camping: Michigan is a wonderland of camping opportunities. There are State Parks, KOA Campgrounds, and Federal Parks that offer a wide array of challenges for the summer campers.
- Chill on a beach: New Buffalo’s Public Beach, on the shore of Lake Michigan, is one of the nation’s top 10 beaches for families. The park’s boardwalk, shallow and clear water, make for a relaxing vacation on the beach. If you are going to the beach for a great swimming expereince, Lake Superior Magazine found the best swimming beach at Bete Grise Beach in Keweenaw.
- Explore the Mitten: There are tours of every kind in Michigan. Pure Michigan can help you pick out something you may not know about. Frankenmuth offers tours to all sizes of groups, check out Michigan’s own, “Little Bavaria”.
These are just a few options that Michigan has to offer, what are you planning on doing this summer in the Mitten?
