Many of my childhood memories involve an early Saturday morning trip to Eastern Market in Detroit. My grandmother would search for the best flower deals as my mom and aunt looked for the freshest fruits and vegetables.
I spent much of the time at the market trying to spot a chicken, rabbit, or a nice farmer that would give me a free sample. The people at Eastern Market were always as vibrant as the colorful foods. This week, August 7 – 13, you can make your own farmers market memories during National Farmers Market Week.
As a child, visiting a farmers market was just for fun, but now I recognize the overreaching benefits. You can improve your lifestyle while boosting the local economy and supporting local farmers. Farmers markets offer a sense of community as you interact with the hard-working people who produce the food that you will take home to your families. It’s also a great place for reasonable prices.
With more than 300 farmers markets, Michigan is the perfect place to start exploring. Visit an old favorite or discover a new market. You can check out Agricultural Marketing Service for a list of Michigan’s farmers markets. What is your favorite farmers market in Michigan?
